Raising a Son, Chasing a Dream: Divina’s Path to Leadership

The Malaika Community Centre helps young people find their footing by encouraging them to learn, dream, and carve out a future for themselves. Every day, young lives are shaped by opportunity, support, and belief. Here is Divina’s story.

My name is Divina, and I am a teacher and coach at the Malaika Community Centre. My journey is one of a deep passion for football and education.

I first joined the Centre shortly after it opened in 2013. From the start, I stood out for my commitment and love of football. At a time when I was often the only girl on the pitch, I learned to be confident and persistent, even when challenges arose.

Life tested me further when I became pregnant and later gave birth to my son. Many people expected me to give up my education and football, but I refused to abandon my dreams. I continued to study and train, determined to build a better future for myself and my child.

Malaika believed in me and supported my return to school. I earned a degree in Physical Education and achieved my CAF coaching licence, two moments I am extremely proud of.

Today, I give back as a teacher and coach at the Community Centre, using my experience to guide and inspire young people. I hope to see more girls and young women believe in their potential and pursue education and sport without fear.

My advice to young women is simple: never give up. Your circumstances do not define you.
